How long were you in the position: 4 months

In your own words, what is the purpose of that committee position:

  • Timeous collection of membership dues & new member payments & payments to Toastmasters International.
  • Maintenance of petty cash tin disbursements, receipts and reconciliations.
  • Monitoring of cash and investment balances.
  • Writing of cheques and for meeting room hire and other costs.
  • Maintaining of accounting records and cash book reconciliations.
  • Collection of cash from members and guests for dinner.

What did you learn during your tenure in that position:

  • Collection of club dues requires assertiveness. This is a business!
  • Investments can earn the club a lot of money.

What is your most memorable moment as committee member:
Payment of dues for 21 members before the first deadline and another 5 before the second deadline.

What activities were you typically responsible for: Refer to purpose of committee position above.

Was it worth it: Yes

Give a five-point checklist for someone to succeed in that position on the committee:

  1. Be assertive when collecting dues.
  2. Reconcile the petty cash tin contents regularly.
  3. Keep documentation for all monetary transactions for an audit trail.
  4. See where you can save the club money or earn extra, e.g. finesman.
  5. Place some funds in a low risk investment & use the returns (where applicable) to buy something to enhance people's learning experience.
