Conversation Tips

Creating or maintaining a good conversation is one area everyone must strive to be better at. Whether it's social or business communication, the skills necessary to communicate effectively are basically the same. Below are some conversation tips you could use in your everyday life.

1. Read a lot.

Or watch the news and listen to the radio frequently. Small talks happen all the time, and when they do, you ought to be ready. If you want to have something interesting or relevant to say to your office mates or your neighbor, keep up with the latest events - may it be news, music, movies or human interest stories. Being updated is one of the best conversation tips.

If you would want to be able to hold intelligent conversations with your colleagues about work and appear competent and capable, then research should be done. The company literature should be your bible, and you should always acquaint yourself with the latest developments in your field.

2. Be appropriate.

Of all the conversation tips, this is the one often taken for granted. When you're talking with the entire family where grandparents and children are both present, then perhaps sensitive issues should not be the point of the conversation. Your closest pal or best friend may enjoy a nightlong debate on philosophical or political topics with you, but these matters may not be the best ones to discuss on a date. Similarly, don't act too familiar with your client or supervisor; it's poor etiquette to discuss intimate details with a business contact.

Office conversations should also be done at the appropriate time and place. While nobody will take notice if you spend a few minutes for small talks at the office, constant chatting is very unprofessional and disrupts work. The same is also applicable in the school setting, or whenever attending talks and seminars. There are simply not good venues for conversations. The key to a good conversation involves timing - finding the appropriate topic, in the appropriate time and place.

3. Humor your audience.

We all love funny people, so among the great conversation tips, is "have a sense of humor." It would always lighten up the mood if you can inject a hilarious anecdote or two during conversion. Note though: it's always important to choose jokes carefully. Always keep it clean and politically correct.

If you can't tell a joke straight up no matter how good it is, then perhaps telling funny stories is not really your thing. Read up on human interest stories instead, and brush up on your trivia list. They're just as good conversation fillers.

4. Always Ask and Listen.

Whenever you're having a conversation, always remember that it is not a monologue. If you're dominating the conversation, allow pauses for the other person to react or ask questions. And if this doesn't work, then ask questions instead and from there open topics the other person is comfortable with.

Always remember that good conversationalists aren't made overnight. These conversation tips take time to master, and will only be developed with practice. Observe the above guidelines as frequently as possible and you will be surprised they will become habits you will never lose.
