Informative speech topics -
Inform AND Enrich your Audience

Informative speech topics is a topic to inform your audience - at the risk of stating the obvious. Finding such a topic where you are sufficiently knowledgeable (or could research the knowledge) but your audience doesn't already know, is our challenge. This means that common sense or every day type information isn't good enough.

What we need is something we know at least something about, out of the mainstream, yet interesting enough that it wold hold the attention of our audience.

Finding informative speech topics

Lets find a topic that you are interested in by answering these questions:

  • What do you do in your job? What keeps you busy and why is that important?
  • Career day - What does a .... do? (fireman, detective, forensic psychologist, dermatologist, etc.)
  • How to play a game or the rules of a game (See demonstration speech topics for finding topics along these veins).
  • Were you ever part of a historical event? What event was it? And what was your experience of it?
  • Researching history - Any event that puzzles you or that you want to know more about? Research it and make it the topic of your informative speech. Questions like:
    • What actually happened during the crusades? And how we know it?
    • What did the American founding fathers actually do when they landed?
    • What was life like as an early settler during the colonial era?
    • How did sailors cross the vast oceans without modern tools?
  • Do you know how to use a software program that not everyone knows about? How does it work and what can it do?
  • Meta-materials (for example Nylon, Velcro, plastic, Kevlar) What is the history around it, who discovered it and how is it made?

You could also browse the sites below for more ideas for interesting informative speech topics. Chances are if it is interesting to you, and someone went through the effort of researching it and writing about it, that it will be interesting to more people. (links will open in a new window)

Crafting your speech around your informative speech topic

Once you have decided on your topic, you can build your speech around it. So let us start by what makes this interesting - tell us about a personal experience you have had that relates to the topic, or perhaps an 'idle musing' where you've wondered 'how' or 'why'.

Then we go on to explore the topic in more detail. Arrange the speech in a way that makes sense, either chronological or topological, and expand on each section or part as necessary. Feel free to blend in a lot of what makes it fascinating to you to ensure you keep the audience interested.

If you've chosen the right informative speech topic for you and the audience, and delivered it with enthusiasm, you will have succeeded in enriching their understanding of the topic and perhaps changed their way of thinking.
