Pronunciation software

Want to improve your pronunciation? Then consider getting pronunciation software!

There are many reasons why anyone would want to improve their pronunciation. At the most basic, effective pronunciation ensures clear communication; you're less likely to get misinterpreted if you speak in the way most people would understand. Clear pronunciation also communicates confidence, competence and credibility. And when you're conducting business within an international setting, it's important that you neutralize communication problems caused by differences in ways of speaking.

So what can pronunciation software do for you?

Not many can afford face-to-face language instruction. Most of them are expensive, and can cost a student many hidden fees, not to mention transportation expenses to get to the class venue. Others are simply very busy, and would prefer to learn during their spare time, in the convenience of their own homes. Pronunciation software is an affordable option, perfect for those willing to be self-taught pronunciation, at their own pace of learning.

And the great thing is, many sellers of pronunciation services also provide live online pronunciation lessons in real time as part of their product package!

There are many kinds of pronunciation software; you need to pick one that's tailor-fitted to your needs and preferences.

Simple ones are mostly computer-based lecturettes. They present phonemes (sounds) used within a specific language, and offer audio samples of how each phoneme is pronounced. A learner then can improve their pronunciation by imitating the voice samples. Note that pronunciation samples may be recordings of real people, or just electronic simulations. Which of two is better really depends on the production quality of the software.

Some instructional software also offer sections about common problems encountered when learning how to pronounce properly, and tips on how to overcome these issues such mouth exercises. Learners can improve their pronunciation by imitating the proper positioning of the lips and tongue as described by the software.

The better ones are those that provide users feedback on their pronunciation. For example, some software allows learners to record their voice as they try out various words or word combinations. Learners can then listen to their version, and see how it compares with the instructor's. More sophisticated programs can present audio graphs on how their voice compares with the sample on key evaluation areas like stress, intonation and sound.

It's important that you first know your learning objectives before you download or purchase software designed to improve your communication.

Some programs have a piece-meal approach to teaching pronunciation; that is, they will tell you how to pronounce using word units. This is great if you're a beginner just learning the sounds, or if you're already a fluent speaker interested in correct some minor mistakes.

Others have a more holistic approach, and keeps practical application in mind. They will teach pronunciation in the context of actual, realistic conversations, which is why some pronunciation software companies have a home, business and school package. These may be best for advanced learners and those interested in a more "in vivo" approach to studying.
