Public Speaking Books

There are various reasons behind the purchase of public speaking books. Some people don't have the time, energy or money to enroll in an actual training program with a public speaking coach. Others may be too shy for the immediate spotlight, and may want to come out of their shell gradually by working on their own. Some may just want to tweak their communication skills, and find new strategies in improving their speech style.

In all of these cases, public speaking books must meet the minimum requirement: being a good resource in harnessing the skill of speaking in front of a crowd.

Given this expectation, one wonders: what is the best way to select the public speaking books that are right for me?

Following these guidelines can help you out:

  • First, think about the most engaging speakers you know, and figure out if he or she has published books on public speaking. The ones we are attracted to as speakers embody our ideal way of communicating, and you can probably develop a similar style through constant practice. It will be good to purchase the books that they have written, or interviews made of them. An autobiography that would offer a glimpse of the person's life may also be powerfully inspiring, indirectly helping you with your confidence to speak in public.
  • Second, look for the reviews on reputable magazines or websites for guidance. It's easy to find comments, suggestions, and remarks from different people online, but be careful when it comes to trusting these reviews which could probably be just paid for. It's best to consult community-managed websites such as amazon.com, where people often flock to sincerely air out the effectiveness and impact of the public speaking books they buy.

  • Third, read the excerpts or the beginning pages to find if the writing matches your interest. Books on public speaking are often written conversationally, but they can be formulated to appeal to different age groups or interest sectors. It's best to confirm if the writing style is for you - if it engages you enough to ensure that you will not fall asleep while reading the book, and that the tips and tricks are actually believable.
  • Fourth, interview your peers about the best public speaking books. Recommendations from familiar faces who actually have the same problem when it comes to improving public speaking skills can help you out. They, of course, will probably have the best intentions when it comes to promoting something that has made a difference in their lives.
  • Fifth, look for the recent edition in eBay or bookshops! Books on speaking are often developed even more as people comment on them. Authors often include an addendum for newer strategies. You should research on the recent edition of your preferred books and scout online or in used books stores just in case you don't have the resources -- or if you want to add more to your collection without breaking the bank.

Public speaking is one of those arts that are best learned through practice. Lots and lots of practice. Where public speaking books come into the picture is when an experienced person can convey lessons he or she has learned through their years of experience. It thus saves you time and money, and hopefully prevents you from making the same mistakes they did. So there is something to be said about getting advice on public speaking from books, so you can definitely go out and get some. Just don't expect to become an expert just from reading it. You still have to experience it.
