The 60th annual Grammy awards are underway and the award for Best New Artist – which is arguably the most coveted award given out at the Grammy Awards – since musicians can only be nominated once and you can only win it once.
The category was stacked with so many talented nominees including Julia Michaels, SZA, Khalid, and Lil Uzi Vert. But Alessia Cara ending up beating them all and was in complete shock when her name was called. This is Alessia’s first year at the Grammy BY THE WAY and she’s nominated for 3 more: Song of The Year, Best Short Form Music Video, and Best Pop Duo/ Group Performance.
Once Alessia’s name was called she went of the stage to accept the award and even though she’s dreamed of winning a Grammy her whole life, she didn’t have a speech planned. But she did manage to thank every one in her life and say this.
Alessia ended her speech by encouraging everyone to “support real music and real artists” since some artists never have the chance to get recognized.
I’m very happy for Alessia and as much as I love Khalid and Sza, I actually think this is very well-deserved. However, what is weird about Alessia winning in this category is that her first debut album aka the one that put her on the map, was released in November of 2015 which means she should have been eligible and nominated for Best New Artist at the 2017 Grammys. But at last year’s Grammys she wasn’t nominated for anything and the Academy never addressed it, but now since she’s won this year, there may be some questions now about the controversy.
But I gotta kick it over to you guys now. What are your thoughts on Alessia Cara winning Best New Artist at this year’s Grammys? Do you think it’s well-deserved or do you think someone else in the category should have took the trophy?
