Demonstrators were joined by celebrities and politicians in a protest to oppose the renewal of Britain’s nuclear weapons system. Thousands are converging on London’s Marble Arch on Saturday to protest Britain’s nuclear weapons system, known as Trident. The demonstration was organized by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) and will feature speeches by Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbyn and Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland, amongst others. Corbyn famously reshuffled his shadow cabinet and ousted nuclear-armament supporter Maria Eagle from the defense portfolio, replacing her with Emily Thornberry, who opposes Trident. Saturday’s demonstration is aimed at swaying British parliamentarians who are set to vote on whether to renew Britain’s nuclear weapons program. “When the arguments are heard in the open, it soon becomes clear that spending an extortionate £183 billion (US4 billion) on Trident is bad for our security, bad for jobs creation, and bad for society as a whole when it’s draining resources from struggling public services,” said CND General-Secretary Kate Hudson. A leaked report by Royal Navy whistle-blower William McNeilly concluded that basic safety and security measures were lacking in the British armed forces’ most sensitive and important department.
