Dr. Karl Payton, Assessing the Efficacy of Immersion Therapy for Public Speaking Anxiety

Is a Keynote by Next Week Possible? Find Out How.

LeTourneau University’s general education curriculum includes COMM1113 — Introduction to Speech Communication. The course revolves around a series of speaking assignments, creating a level of immersion that can stretch students beyond their comfort zone. To assess the degree to which the class affects students’ comfort levels regarding public speaking, the Personal Report of Public Speaking Anxiety is administered at the beginning of the semester as a pretest and at the end of the semester as a post-test.

This presentation will define the basic operative terms (“immersion therapy” and “public speaking anxiety”), introduce the assessment instrument, and discuss pretest/post-test results from Spring 2013.
