How do you practice a key presentation? When I ask people this question I typically get two responses. One is ‘I don’t’, and the other is ‘in my head’.
‘I don’t’ is a pretty rare response and tends to be people in business who claim to be far too busy to practice and anyway, they say they know their subject too well. That may be true, but the reality is that their business presentation is much weaker as a result.
Far more commonly I hear ‘I practice in my head’. That’s a good place to start. There is nothing wrong with practicing your presentation in your head. Its a good idea, but alone, it is not enough. it is really important that you practice saying things out loud. That you rehearse making the connections between your brain and your mouth so that you don’t stumble over your words.
Ideally, you are practicing in similar circumstances that you expect for the presentation. In other words, if you expect to present standing up, stand up when you practice.
Next, practice your presentation in front of a mirror, and then friends, family members, even pets. Anyone who will represent an audience. As your confidence grows, record yourself. Take a voice only recording and then a video recording so that you are able to experience what your potential audience will experience.
Don’t practice until you get it right. Practice until you can’t get it wrong.
