Public Speaking Tip: Situational Anxiety

In this public speaking tip I am talking about a situation I frequently encounter with clients and that’s Situational Anxiety. This is when a person feels quite confident as a communicator in their daily work, but when placed in a different environment and asked to speak they get nervous and anxious.

Why is this? Well there are 3 reasons I share in the video.

What can be done about this type of common anxiety? Here are a few ideas in addition to what I shared in the video.

1. Prepare early for your presentation. The more prepared you are the more likely you are to feel confident going in. Don’t fall for the myth that preparation will just cause more anxiety. The opposite is true!

2. Rehearse in front of others as part of your preparation. Hearing feedback before the actual presentation and being able to incorporate that will make you feel more confident that what you’re going to deliver will be good.

3. Start affirming yourself daily. Tell yourself things like, “This is new for me, but I’m going to be okay. I’m going to do just fine. This will be fun. This will be a great learning and growing experience for me.” When you tell yourself things like that you can’t help but benefit from the experience.
