Fox News recently reported that Jerry Jones, the Dallas Cowboys owner, has stated that any of his players who are seen disrespecting the flag will not play. Period. Jones has made some extremely strong statements concerning the kneeling controversy since Vice President Pence walked out of the game in Indianapolis when the 49er’s knelt during the Anthem.
“I know this, we cannot … in the NFL in any way give the implication that we tolerate disrespecting the flag,” he said following the Cowboys’ 35-31 loss to the Green Bay Packers. “We know that there is a serious debate in this country about those issues, but there is no question in my mind that the National Football League and the Dallas Cowboys are going to stand up for the flag. So we’re clear.”
Jones was seen in a big production kneeling with his team prior to the Anthem at the Cardinals/Cowboys game two weeks ago. The move was claimed to have been showing solidarity with the plight of the protest, but then they stood with arms locked during the actual Anthem as a show of support to that as well. The move was clearly meant to be Jerry Jones’ way of compromising, but it looks as if that is all over now.
You can guarantee that liberals head are spinning at the statements made by Jones, and a few other coaches and owners since the onset of all of this.
“There is no room here if it comes between looking non-supportive of our players and of each other or creating the impression that you’re disrespecting the flag, we will be non-supportive of each other,” Jones said. “We will not disrespect the flag.”
When asked if he was aware of any of his players possibly raising their fists in a black power salute Jones had this to say:
“I don’t know about that. But if there’s anything that is disrespectful to the flag, then we will not play. OK? Understand? If we are disrespecting the flag, then we won’t play. Period.”
The NFL has stated that the game operations manual distributed to teams does in fact includes a reference to players standing for the anthem, but that it’s a policy and not a rule. The league has said it doesn’t plan to punish players over anthem protests.
Jones has a slightly different opinion on that “policy.”
“The league in mind should absolutely take the rules we’ve got on the books and make sure that we do not give the perception that we’re disrespecting the flag,” Jones said.
Hannity recently reported that the Miami Dolphins owner has also reversed his course and is demanding that the players stand for the Anthem. Of course this new development comes just weeks after the players protesting damaged the teams patriotic image and financial bottom-line.
According to the Sun Sentinel, Dolphins owner Steve Ross changed his mind after three of his players “took a knee” as the “Star-Spangled Banner” rang-out in the stadium last week telling his head coach to inform the players that future protests would not be tolerated.
Speaking with reporters before the game, Ross said President Trump had transformed the original intent behind the protests from players’ calls for social justice to a referendum on the league’s patriotism.
“He’s changed that whole paradigm of what protest is,” said the owner. “And I think it’s incumbent upon the players today, because of how the public is looking at it, to really stand and really salute the flag.”
“Right now [with] these kids you want understanding, that we really have to get out into the white community and have them accept the fact this isn’t about all black kids and the protest they have,” he added.
The National Football League finds itself at the center of a nationwide controversy, following weeks of player protests against the national anthem and US flag. President Trump called on all Americans to boycott the league until owners and officials crackdown on athletes who “disrespect” those who fought and died defending the US.
That boycott was implemented by the millions and seems to be working. Most patriots are not against what the protests actually stand for, but they are against the protests using disrespect to our flag, our country, and our military. The financial and fan-based damage done may be irreparable, but that is a matter left to be seen. However, there is no better way to fix it than to demand respect for this nation regardless of societal issues each person may have.
