Welcome Statement Public Speaking Fall 2017

Is a Keynote by Next Week Possible? Find Out How.

Happy new term, everyone!
My name is Dr. Eric Hauser (I go by Eric) and I will be your instructor for this online section of COMM 1315, Public Speaking.
I am presently writing this in Townsend, Massachusetts, a small rural town on the border of Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
The purpose of the course, obviously, is to increase your public speaking skills. A lot of people have a great deal of fear of public speaking—including many of my students. Part of the way to overcome this fear is to jump in and do it. Another part is giving you the tools to be successful. Between the techniques and the practice the goal is to help you communicate more effectively. It’s expected that many have difficulties at first – we will work through it together.
In this course you will have 5 speeches: an introductory, an informative speech, a group presentation and two persuasive speeches. You will also have 2 exams, a midterm and a final. You will have a speech report to complete, individual evaluations and also peer evaluations.
The course is presently under re-development. I will add things as quickly as I am able. I am always aware of the fact that you need to give students the tools for success. You will have what you need as quickly as I can provide it—and if I need to adjust due dates to account for class changes I will. Please read the syllabus carefully—understanding it is obviously key for your success in the course.
Since I am in the Eastern time zone I won’t always be available at just the time you need me. I will check my Lamar University email every day at about 6:00 p.m. CST – which is 7:00 p.m. EST. I will be available for chat during office hours. I promise to answer you as quickly as I can. If you need further assistance, I can set up phone appointments as appropriate. I’m really looking forward to the chance to work with each of you more closely.
