Are you getting out enough and by getting out I mean are you attending events, are you speaking at events, are you making a real effort to show up in public in places. I will confess to you that going out and getting out and going out in the evening, you know you can be out every night of the week and that has not been my strong suit in business. I will tell you I think it’s hurt me. Many of you know that I am a shy introvert. Yep, it’s a double whammy. So walking into a room of people I don’t know, it’s a threat to me. Now I’ve learned how to push through that and many of you are surprised when I admit that to you in person. But if you’re going to have a business, if you’re going to be in business, you have to get out and you have to push through any shyness or introversion you may be feeling. Not everybody’s an extrovert. In fact half the population identifies as introverted or shy or both! But I’m asking you if you’re getting out because I’ve gotten out more in the last year and a half than I had ever before in my career and my business has skyrocketed as a result. And I wanted to tell you about why I do it now, what took me so long. I’m not actually going to go into that, but why I do it now and what I think the benefits are for all of us. So the first thing is attending events. You know there are a ton of local events. People, by the way, are always looking for speakers, they are always in need of speakers, so if you want to practice your speaking, you want to get out there and want to network and you want to meet local people, potential clients, create leads, start calling your local meetups, get in touch with local clubs, the Kiwanis, Rotary, Chambers of Commerce, other types of business associations. Trust me when I tell you they’re always looking for speakers and the 2013 calendar is not finished being booked yet. So get out there, call your local people. At the very least, go to some of the meetings, see if it’s the right fit for you. Sometimes you go to these meetings and you think this is not my ideal group, so I’m not going to waste my time calling and preparing to speak to them. Although, it’s often hard to tell. But get out to those local events first. Next are the bigger events, the events that are held by marketing specialists or associations generally, and these are often two and three day events, there are a ton of these. You could be going to one of these every week of every month. You could never be home. And this year, as I did last year, I am attending a number of these events. One of the events that I am attending is at the end of February, February 28 and March 1st, I’m attending an event by the coach, Lisa Sasevich, called Event Profit Secrets. I’m an attendee. I’m not sponsoring, I’m not speaking. I’m attending that event and it’s not an inexpensive ticket, it’s a five thousand dollar ticket. And I’m attending that event because I need to do more events of my own and Lisa’s a master at this and she provides a blueprint. So I want to go and learn. And I also know that the people who will be at this event, I want to network with, I want to get to know them. They, some of them are in my target market, some of them are my ideal clients, and some of them are my ideal mentors in one form or another. So I am going to that event and I’m very excited about it. The next event I’m attending and this time as a speaker and a sponsor, is Angelique Rewers’ Inside Edge and that is held in the D.C. area. And the reason I’ve decided to sponsor this event, is because it gives me an opportunity to showcase charisma on-stage and on-camera presentation, which, as you know, I think everybody needs. In fact, I’m certain everybody needs these skills. I’m going to this event not only because it’s in the D.C. metro area and I have a very good network there, and because it’s convenient, but because of the contacts I’m going to make at this event. That is going to require me, as a sponsor, to really be on all the time, so I’ll have to find some time, during the course of the days that I’m there, it’s a three day event, so I’ll have to find some time, during the course of the days that I’m there, and it’s a three-day event, to just decompress, to unwind, because that kind of stuff saps energy from me. By the way, I have some guest tickets to that event, so if you are in the D.C. area or even if you’re not and you want to go to a great event, go to InsideEdge2013.com to check it out and let me know if you want one.
