The variety of Toastmasters speeches that you'll get the opportunity to practice at a Toastmasters meeting is wide. From the introductory Competent Communicator manual to the opportunity to participate in speech contests, you can test and evaluate your public speaking skill in every arena.
Lets start by looking at the Toastmaster speeches for the first communication manual (each manual has several speaking assignment for you to do at your club). You start with an introductory speech, the Ice Breaker, and through 10 speeches of learning different skill sets, you are tasked to deliver and inspirational speech. (For more on the Competent Communicator speeches and speech topics for them, visit this page). Once you've successfully completed these 10 Toastmaster speeches, you'll be a certified CTM or Competent Toastmaster.

The first manual is just a start though. You have the opportunity to do more prepared assignments with different manuals covering communication topics like Interpersonal Communication and Story telling. These work with other leadership assignments (club and regional leadership positions as well as organizing events or starting a club) to the qualification of Advanced Toastmaster Bronze, -Silver and -Gold.
How do you like impromptu speaking? Every club meeting has a section called 'table topics' where you are asked to speak for 1 to 2 minutes without having prepared.
For some who enjoy competition, you can do competitive speeches in a contest environment. Every year Toastmasters hold speech contests at the club level and you can progress to compete all the way to international level. Some clubs even do their own contests more regularly. Speech contests are held for prepared speaking, impromptu speaking, humorous speaking and speaking evaluations. So whatever your public speaking competitive streak runs in, you'll have the opportunity to compete.
Think you're good? This is Ed Tate, Toastmasters World Champion of Public speaking 2000 - You'd better be good.
There is also ample opportunity for organizational or structural speaking where you need to organize a meeting; present results back to the club; or chair a club committee meeting.
All these areas of the various Toastmasters speeches will teach you the public speaking skills you'll need to become a more confident and successful communicator.
